Rock Cricket Pavilion

Location: Rock, Northumberland

Client: Confidential (Tender Submission)

Type: Community Sports Pavilion

Set within the rural landscape of Rock, Northumberland, our proposal for the new cricket pavilion draws deeply on the natural and cultural heritage of the area. Inspired by the local sawmill and the rhythms of the surrounding woodland, the design celebrates the relationship between cricket, craft, and landscape.

The architectural form is guided by the organic contours of a tree, with gentle curves and branching lines informing the pavilion’s silhouette. At the heart of the structure, repurposed dead trees are reimagined as timber columns, standing proudly like players positioned on a cricket field. These natural columns not only serve as a structural framework but also as a sculptural tribute to both the sport and the woodland that inspires it.

The pavilion is conceived as a series of adaptable segments, allowing the space to flex with the seasons and community needs. From match days to school workshops, from winter gatherings to summer celebrations, the design ensures the pavilion is a year-round community asset, not just a seasonal shelter.

Balancing craftsmanship with sustainability, the Rock Cricket Pavilion honours its rural setting while offering a contemporary interpretation of tradition – a place where sport, nature, and community come together in a uniquely Northumbrian way.
